(WASHINGTON DC - December 21, 2009) The Islamic Information Center would like to offer its condolences on the tragic loss of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, to both the grieving Montazeri family and rest of the Muslim
ummah (community).
Grand Ayatollah Montazeri passed away this week, at the age of 87. He was a renowned Islamic jurist, and his passing is an irreparable loss to the entire world.
"Ayatollah" is a high ranking title given to Shī'ah scholars. Those who carry the title are experts in Islamic studies such as jurisprudence, ethics, and philosophy and usually teach in Islamic seminaries.
Only a few of the most important ayatollah are accorded the rank of Grand Ayatollah (
Ayatollah Uzma, "Great Sign of God"), and are revered as leaders in the Muslim community.
According to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (May God Bless Him), "The death of an
alim [scholar], is like the death of the universe" emphasizing the great importance of scholars in the religion of Islam.
IIC would like to ask community members to pray on behalf of the Grand Ayatollah and his family in this period of mourning.
