In early 2007, the Islamic Information Center relocated its main headquarters to the National Press Club building in Washington D.C.  The National Press Club is an international news media hub, home to hundreds of media organizations from around the world, and regularly hosts world leaders and various elected officials from around the nation.  By positioning an office in this location, the Islamic Information Center is uniquely suited to disseminate important Islamic information throughout the world in a professional and instantaneous manner.

(WASHINGTON D.C. - July 8, 2008) The Islamic Information Center would like to express its concern over recent sectarian issues in the country of Egypt. The Egyptian Interior Ministry has asked Sunni Muslim leaders to educate national security officials on how to combat the rise of Shiite doctrine. This new policy is incredibly intolerant and will only incite sectarian hatred among the Islamic community in Egypt, and accordingly the Islamic Information Center condemns such efforts.

Sheikh Mohamaed Abdel Moneim El-Berry, from the powerful Al Azhar University, was quoted in saying that his lessons to police involved the "dangers" of Shiite beliefs. El-Berry has even decided that Shiite communities that wish to build their own mosques should be considered a threat as well.

This kind of unaccepting and bigoted mentality about another's faith, particularly of another sect, can only reflect poorly on Egyptian policies regarding interfaith relations. To request the teaching of governmental officials on how to stop the spread of a belief is destructive to the harmony and balance of all religions within Egypt.

The Islamic Information Center believes that these policies are antithetical towards creating a more progressive nation and will only result in negative consequences.

Countries like Egypt should be making an effort to mend the split between Sunnis and Shiites, instead of contributing to it. There has been much tension and animosity between the two communities recently, and there should be considerable endeavors made to bridge the gap between the sects. Peace amongst Sunnis and Shiites, and amongst other religions in the North Africa/Middle East region is an admirable goal, and something that many states and countries are striving for, in order create a better nation and world atmosphere.
