(WASHINGTON DC - April 8, 2009) The Islamic Information Center is saddened by reports of suicide bombings against mosques in Pakistan, and condemns all perpetrators of this heinous violence. According to various sources, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside of a Shi'ite mosque in Chakwal, Pakistan, killing 26 people and injuring 40 others, officials said.
Bloomberg news reports on the attack as follows:
"A suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shiite religious ceremony in northern Pakistan yesterday, killing at least 22 people and wounding 60 others.
The attacker struck at the gates to a mosque in the town of Chakwal, 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of the capital, Islamabad, the official Associated Press of Pakistan reported. A day earlier, six security personnel were killed in a suicide bombing in Islamabad.
The Pakistani Taliban group, led by Baitullah Mehsud, claimed responsibility for both attacks, the New York Times reported yesterday. The group plans to carry out two bombings a week in Pakistan ..., the Times said, citing deputy leader Hakimullah Mehsud."
IIC considers this type of violence to be playing in the favor of those enemies of Islam who would like to see discord among the people of Pakistan and all over the world. This type of attack only serves to stir tensions and only benefits the political agendas of those people seeking to divide Pakistan. IIC calls upon all parties involved to stop the violence totally and completely. The Islamic Information Center also calls upon the government of Pakistan and the international community to prevent further violence from eroding the peace in Pakistan. It is the responsibility of the Pakistani government to safeguard its people, and considering the unanswered attacks against civilians in recent weeks: Pakistan is not doing its job.
Accordingly, IIC recommends that the United Nations step in and enact efforts to stop this cycle of violence. If Pakistan cannot protect its own people, then the international community should step in and do so.
