| | (WASHINGTON DC - September 17, 2009) The Islamic Information Center is proud to announce that tomorrow, Friday September 18, 2009 will be the organizations 7th Annual Interfaith Iftar, and the first of a series of events during IIC's National Month of Iftar.
The event will feature the following speakers:
Imam Yahya Hendi Pastor Angelika Selle Anuttama Dasa Lillian Cruz Recognition of Underage Children who Fasted Dr. Timothy Dissmeyer Vicente Garcia Mariam Agah Imam Syed Naqvi
and a speaker from the Federal Bureau of Investigations to speak on Muslim relations with the FBI.
Speaker Bios:
Imam Yahya Hendi
Imam Yahya Hendi is the Muslim chaplain at Georgetown University, the first American university to hire a full-time Muslim chaplain. Imam Hendi is also the Imam of the Islamic Society of Frederick, Frederick, MD and is the Muslim Chaplain at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He serves as a member of the Islamic Jurisprudence Council of North America and has served as an adjunct faculty member for Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Science and Osher's Lifelong Learning Institute of John Hopkins University, Fordham University and Hartford Seminary.
Imam Hendi often visits and lectures at churches and synagogues hoping to create a new positive relationship between the followers of the three Abrahamic religions. In his lectures, Imam Hendi focuses on issues related to gender relations, domestic violence, world peace, social, economic and political justice, and inter-religious and interfaith issues.
Pastor Angelika Selle
Pastor Angelika Selle is currently the Pastor of New Hope Family Church in Landover Hills, MD where she lives and promotes peace and healing among the families and the community. Through the Family Federation for World Peace, she served as a missionary and peace maker to Japan, Korea, and America for 30 years.
In 1998, together with her husband and a black family, the Taylor family, she founded a reconciliation group in Maryland where the Selles and other whites attempted to make a substantial restitution between the blacks and whites. In 2001 she founded the Prayer in Action Ministry and in 2003 the Interfaith Prayer and Fellowship Ministry in Washington DC. She has been instrumental in several settings of reconciliation between Jews and Germans in Israel and Europeans, Africans, and African Americans in Africa.
Anuttama Dasa
Anuttama Dasa is Director of Communications for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), a monotheistic, or Vaishnava, Hindu tradition. He has served as a member of ISKCON's Governing Body Commission since February 1999. He is a Trustee of the Bhaktivedanta College in Radhadesh, Belgium. He also serves as Vice-President of the Religion Communicators Council, is convener of the annual Vaishnava-Christian Dialogue, now in its 12th year, and serves as Board Chair of the ISKCON Krishna Temple in Potomac, Maryland. Dasa and his wife, Rukmini, live in Rockville, MD, happily near their son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren.
Lillian Cruz
Lillian Cruz is a Constituent Services Representative from Congressman Chris Van Hollen's office. She will be reading us a letter from the Congressman of Maryland’s 8th District.
Dr. Timothy Dissmeyer
Rev. Dr. Timothy Dissmeyer is presently adjunct faculty at Frederick Community College and Anne Arundel Community College, teaching classes in world religions. He is a retired clergyman, having previously served as a pastor in 8 United Methodist churches in Maryland and Washington DC. Prior to that, he worked as an educator and consultant in Germany and the Philippines with the Ecumenical Institute based in Chicago. He and his wife, Carol, are the parents of two adult children, Nathan and Suzie.
Vicente Garcia
Vicente Garcia is currently the Executive Director of the 9/11 Unity Walk, which is a nonprofit, interfaith organization based in Washington, DC. Mr. Garcia also serves as the National Program Manager at the Center for Progressive Leadership. He has spent the last few years throughout the Middle East and the US promoting better relations between these two regions, particularly by organizing cultural and citizen diplomacy efforts through film, music, new media, and cultural exchanges. Mr. Garcia was formerly the Global Peace & Security Program Director at Americans for Informed Democracy, a US-based international youth advocacy organization. He has worked at the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office in Brussels, Belgium, where he researched and developed systems and networks that link activities between peacebuilding organizations and the European Union.
Mariam Agah
Sr. Mariam Agah has taught in Catholic and Muslim schools, as well as public school. She has helped establish Muslim daily and Sunday schools and has served on their boards. Additionally, she has conducted symposia for Prince William County Public Schools and Police Department and given conferences for Muslim full-time and Sunday schools. She write articles for Muslim publications and speaks on Muslim, family, and interfaith topics both here and abroad. Sr. Mariam has received a BS in Secondary Education from Seton Hall University in NJ, a Master of Education in Special Ed from the University of Maryland, and has done doctoral studies in Reading and Education Administration at Virginia Tech.
