The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America will be holding their annual conference in Baltimore, MD on the weekend of October 31st, 2008. This conference will mark the largest ever gathering of Shi'ite scholars in North America, as more than 100 scholars, or 'Ulema', will be in attendance.

The Islamic Information Center condemns the attack on the United States Embassy in Yemen. The embassy was attacked earlier this week, killing seventeen individuals, including a young American student, named Susan Al-Baneh, who had gone to Yemen to get married. These attacks are an atrocity, and completely against the ideals of Islam, which teaches moderation, prayer, fasting, and good will to humanity. IIC supports any efforts to capture the perpetrators and hopes that they will be brought to justice quickly. Additionally, the Islamic Information Center gives its support and prayers to the families of those who were killed in this attack.

IIC this week, voices its concern over the inflammatory newspaper insert delivered to key electoral localities by the little-known Clarion Fund.  The group, a non-profit, refuses to name its donors.  The Fund is spending millions of dollars to distribute 28 million copies of the emotionally laden anti-Muslim DVD, "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West," to 70 newspapers in Presidential election swing states.  The contents of this DVD are false, encourage hatred, and serve no other purpose than to encourage Islamophobia, the irrational fear and hatred of peaceful Muslims and Islam.
