In early 2007, the Islamic Information Center relocated its main headquarters to the National Press Club building in Washington D.C.  The National Press Club is an international news media hub, home to hundreds of media organizations from around the world, and regularly hosts world leaders and various elected officials from around the nation.  By positioning an office in this location, the Islamic Information Center is uniquely suited to disseminate important Islamic information throughout the world in a professional and instantaneous manner.

 
(WASHINGTON DC - May 8, 2009) The Islamic Information Center is proud to announce that one of its Board of Advisors, Dr. Hassan Abbas, will be speaking on Capitol Hill this coming Monday.

The event is sponsored by the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association and is a part of their Public & International Affairs Briefing Series, and is open to the public for free of charge!

The name of this briefing is entitled

 The Future of Pakistan:
Sustainable or Collapsed State?

Dr. Abbas will outline the turbulent history of Pakistan and discuss the various factors contributing to its current challenges with nuclear safety issues, infighting, anti-American sentiment and the growing Talibanization threat. He will offer detailed recommendations for both U.S. and Pakistan policy makers on how to rescue the fate of Pakistan. Copies of the new ISPU Report Pakistan Can Defy the Odds: How to Rescue a Failing State will be available to Congressional Staffers.

Speaker Biography:
 
Dr. Hassan Abbas is a Fellow at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) and a Research Fellow at the Belfer Center's Project on Managing the Atom and International Security Program. He is a former Pakistani government official who served in the administrations of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto (1995-1996) and President Pervez Musharraf (1999-2000). Dr. Abbas serves on the IIC Board of Advisors, advising the organization about key political and academic issues as necessary.

His latest book, Pakistan's Drift into Extremism: Allah, the Army and America's War on Terror  (M.E. Sharpe) has been on bestseller lists in India and Pakistan and widely reviewed internationally including the New York Times, Boston Globe, Far Eastern Economic Review, The Hindu, Dawn, etc. He has also appeared as an analyst on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS, and as a political commentator on VOA and BBC. He received his Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. 

He has an LL.M. in International Law from Nottingham University, UK, where he was a Britannia Chevening Scholar (1999). He also remained a visiting fellow at the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School (2002-2003) and later continued at the Program on Negotiation at HLS as a visiting scholar (2003-2004).

His research interests are Pakistan's nuclear program and the Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan controversy; religious extremism in South and Central Asia, and "Islam and the West." His forthcoming book is titled: "Sovereignty Belongs to Allah": Constitutionalism and Human Rights in the Islamic States. He runs Watandost, which is a blog on Pakistan-related affairs.
