IIC Main Offices | | In early 2007, the Islamic Information Center relocated its main headquarters to the National Press Club building in Washington D.C. The National Press Club is an international news media hub, home to hundreds of media organizations from around the world, and regularly hosts world leaders and various elected officials from around the nation. By positioning an office in this location, the Islamic Information Center is uniquely suited to disseminate important Islamic information throughout the world in a professional and instantaneous manner.
| | (WASHINGTON DC - April 8, 2009) The Islamic Information Center is alarmed by reports of a particular piece of legislation in Afghanistan that has been attributed to Shi'ite views. While the exact text of the legislation is not widely available, news reports have made mention of "four day" requirements of wives to their husbands, and other confusing and contradictory reports regarding this law. IIC wishes to clarify that whatever the text might say, in truth Islam is a religion that enjoins its believers to treat each other with mutual respect, honor, and dignity. There are no laws in Islam that call for subjugation of men or women in any variety, and any reports otherwise are entirely false.
In particular, the Jaferi school of Islam has been revolutionary in formally and doctrinally granting more rights, privileges, and freedom to women, than has any other major religion in the history of the world. This is evidenced by the fact that the Prophet Muhammad's wife, Lady Khadija, (May God Bless Them Both), was an eminent businesswoman in her time, and the Prophet respected and supported Lady Khadija in her professional life whenever possible. Furthermore, there are many honored female leaders in the Shia belief system, including Lady Khadija herself; Lady Fatima; Mary, Mother of Jesus; Lady Zainab binte Ali; Lady Masooma e Qum; Lady Narjis Khatoon, and many more. In fact, whenever mentioning the names of these Holy personalities, followers of the Muslim faith always make sure to pronounce a prayer asking God to bless them. Shias take their religion from Prophet Muhammad and his family, showing that respecting and honoring women is a core belief, one that cannot be tarnished by any sort of law that imposes new demands upon them. Various authorities in Afghanistan have indicated that news reports regarding the law are not factually correct, and while they are being sorted out, IIC recommends that you read the information packet on Lady Fatima, daughter of Prophet Muhammad, and see what Islam teaches about women.
