Suicide Attacks July 2008

The Islamic Information Center condemns the recent attacks made by female suicide bombers on pilgrims in Iraq. Three bombers targeted a group of Shiite pilgrims who were on their way to a holy shrine; the attacks killed at least 32 people and wounded about 102. Seven more pilgrims were gunned down one day earlier in a town close to Baghdad. Another female bomber detonated her explosives in the midst of a Kurdish political rally in Kirkuk, killing 38 and wounding 178 others.
The use of female bombers is becoming a difficult issue , since male security agents cannot search women. According to the U.S. military attacks made by women were at eight in 2007, but have now risen to almost 25. More than 200 women were deployed to perform searches, and hopefully more will be sent out.
These atrocious acts of terrorism are only splitting the communities of Iraq. In a time when the Iraqi people should be uniting to face the difficulties of rebuilding a torn nation, violence has become the solution to many problems. The attacks in Kirkuk and on the Shiite pilgrims will in no way appease forces vying for power, and there is only so much the Iraqi security forces can do. For now they have created curfews and increased checkpoints in an attempt to keep people safe from further attacks.
