Americans want to Hear More on Iraq
Thursday, May 22, 2008 A recent poll from the Zogby news release has demonstrated that a majority of the American people believe coverage on the Iraq war has been fair or poor. When respondents to the poll were asked what coverage they would like to see more of, stories about the Iraqi people and government were the two most chosen choices. It is believed that television has dumped Iraq as a story, and that there is still a need of clarification on many issues concerning the war. No distinction has been made between Abdul Aziz al-Hakim's Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq and Muqtada al-Sadr's Sadr Movement, both of which are Shiite religious parties. Many Americans believe there is a need for more coverage saying that the war even has an impact on their local communities.

Abed Ayoub ADC Earlier this month The Department of Homeland Security, and The United States Citizens and Immigration Services (USCIS) introduced a plan that would reduce the Naturalization Background backlog, as well as the green card background. Officials hope to move nearly 900,000 applicants by the end of September. This is great news for the Muslim and Arab communities, respectively; however a much larger battle on the immigration front looms, in the form of NSEERS.

Mowahid Shah The paramount issue is presented to be one of Islamic 'extremism'. It is pertinent, therefore, to inquire what inflames and exacerbates this perceived brand of 'extremism'. Here, it is not just Afghanistan or Iraq which matters. Kashmir matters, Palestine matters, Chechnya matters, and the Balkans matter. And so, too, matters the Western mind-set and policies. It is the latter which is most responsible for the inexcusable re-eruption of the cartoon controversy in Europe.

Dr. Liyakat Takim University of Denver The composition of the American Muslim community is far from homogeneous. In fact, American Islam is a mosaic of many ethnic, racial, sectarian, and national groups. Scholars who look at Muslims in America as a monolithic entity often neglect the various nuances that characterize the diverse Muslim population here. The growing presence of the American Muslim community has led to increased interaction between Muslims living here and those abroad. Globalization and improved modes of communications have further allowed foreign ideas to flow freely, enabling foreign accretions to permeate the lives of American Muslims.

By Sehar Sabir Despite being a relatively new demographic to North America, Shi’ite Muslims are flourishing in the United States and Canada. In fact, according to a census performed by the Al Huda institute and projections based upon that report, the community is growing in leaps and bounds. In 1954, a Lebanese World War II veteran organized the Federation of Islamic Association (FIA). This organization now owns its own buildings and extensive camp grounds, publishes the Muslim Star, and funds scholarships for college bound high school graduates. Since the establishment of the FIA, Shi’ite in the United States and Canada have established approximately 292 Mosques, 730 Mussallas, 750 Husseinyas, 872 societies/associations, 337 Cultural Centers, 935 elementary and secondary school classes, 83 publications, and held an impressive 1329 religious and cultural functions as early as 1995. Since then, nearly 25 annual conferences, conventions, retreats, and camps have arisen to accommodate this community, boasting large crowds, and increased attendance each year.

By Rida Bukhari Rizvi To this very day, the scholars of the Economic discipline debate the use of, or the means of determining, “minimum wage”. In its most rudimentary form, wage is not just the concept of money paid to an individual but rather the tangible amount of value assigned to the intangible value of human labor. Every school of Economic from the Mercantilists in the 18th century to the Neoclassicalists and Institutionalists today have tried with limited success to determine the true economic value of labor. In Ayatollah Muhammad Baqir as-Sadr’s Iqtisaduna (“Our Economics”) we find Islam’s solution to this problem, predating even the Mercantilists.

The twentieth-century witnessed a dramatic increase in the migration of Muslims to the American shores. In the last century, Islam became an integral part of the American religious landscape and gradually, Muslims became a visible part of the fabric of American society. Even though the Muslim community has been present in America since the late nineteenth century, there was limited integration with non-Muslims before the events of September 11, 2001. agencies.

Since 2003, the Islamic Information Center Inc. (IIC) has been making waves throughout the country. The center was founded to project a positive image of Islam on three main levels, in order to change perceptions and build bridges. The first part of society that IIC wishes to work on is to establish interfaith connections with the local and national communities. Next, IIC would like to establish a positive and accurate image of Islam in the print, radio, television, and internet newsmedia. Finally, the IIC hopes to help portray an authentic representation of Islam to elected officials and government agencies. IIC has accomplished a great deal by pursuing a campaign of presenting Islam to interfaith groups and organizations,. More than a hundred churches, synagogues, and other places of worship have heard about, met with, or encountered IIC in one way or another with promising results.

Politicians Speaking in Support of Muslims
By Hafiz Rashid
With Islam being targeted heavily by American politicians in the past, an Muslim in America these days can’t expect to see a lot of positive news. Ever since September 11, 2001, many politicians have looked towards the Muslim population in this country and seen only security risks. However, recent events are showing that a change may be in order. In October, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a resolution recognizing the holy month of Ramadan and expressing the “deepest respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world" by a margin of 376-0. No other resolution has ever passed in this country before, and certainly not by this extent. To top it all off, there were over 30 cosponsors of the bill in addition to the bill’s main sponsor, Rep. Eddie Johnson of Texas (D). Of course, Congress’s lone Muslim, Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota (D) was one of the co-sponsors.

The Nation Article, by Mowahid Hussain Shah Published: May 4, 2008 Government departments in the US, such as the Department of Homeland Security, the National Counter-Terrorism Center, and the State Department, are now instructing their personnel not to describe radicals as 'Islamo-fascists' or 'jihadists'. There is a growing sense that use of such terminology offends the larger Muslim community. It is the point this writer has been making for years in the US and elsewhere. To measure its true offensiveness, let someone in Western media or academia try routinely depicting evangelical Christians as 'Christian-fascists' or Zionist settlers of occupied Palestinian territories as 'Judeo-fascists'. This over-clever ploy to use the behavior of the few to tarnish the whole may ultimately backfire and prove to be a self-inflicted wound...
