Shi'ite Scholar Court Scheduled Appearence Next Week

Imam Safdar Razi, a prominent Shi'ite scholar was arrested in early April at his Plano, TX home. Imam Razi was legally seeking political asylum when he was suddenly arrested for "immigration charges" according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. No further explanation was offered. In response Muslim and Intrafaith leaders have started efforts to secure Shaikh Razi's release. Imam Razi is due in court again on April 29, 2008

IIC Chairman, Imam Syed Naqvi, to deliver Friday Prayers at the Capitol

Imam Syed Naqvi, Islamic Information Center Chairman of the Board of Directors, will be delivering Friday Prayers, or Jumah Salaat, as the Guest Lecturer, or Khateeb on May 16, 2008.

The service takes place every Friday and Imam Naqvi's lectures will be continued on a scheduled basis at the Capitol. Stay tuned for more details!
Amnesty International Praises Pakistani Efforts

Amnesty International lauded Pakistan's approval of a key human rights treaty and signing of two others. "Becoming a state party to UN human rights conventions is a key step to ensuring human rights are respected, protected and realized for all in Pakistan in line with international standards," said Amnesty International.
Saudi: Many militants on drugs

A large number of militants arrested by Saudi security forces were on drugs, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef says.The Saudi official said the ministry has seized tons of drugs and millions of tranquilizer pills in operations in which more than 400 members of the kingdom's narcotics squads have been killed, AP reported."Many of those who have been arrested in terror-related (incidents) were drug users,'' said Nayef.
Hundreds of suspected militants have been arrested since Saudi Arabi launched a crackdown on "terrorist cells" following attacks on residential compounds in Riyadh in May 2003.
Israeli minister seeks to meet Hamas

An Israeli minister has passed a proposal to former US President Jimmy Carter, offering to meet the leadership of Palestinian Hamas. Industry and trade minister Eli Yishai "would be happy to meet anyone relevant -- including Mashaal" to appeal for freedom for Gilad Shalit, spokesman Roei Lachmanovich quoted him as telling Carter on Friday.

Former US President Jimmy Carter met with a variety of officials from the Palestinian group Hamas. Carter believes it is necessary to negotiate with all relevant parties in a dispute to achieve any sort of true peace.  Despite the fact that Carter does not claim to support any militant activities, nor does he speak on behalf of any country or group, Carter has received criticism from different groups in the US who are apparently opposed to peaceful dialogue.

Brigitte Bardot is on trial in France for charges of fanning discrimination and racial hatred against Muslims. Bardot has been put on trial for these charges in the past, and repeatedly sentenced as guilty. Prosecutors are seeking harsher penalties as Bardot seems unwilling to change her ways.
Amnesty International Calls for Investigation into Israeli Attack

Amnesty International called for an immediate independent investigation into killings of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip this week. "Yesterday's strikes, which the Israeli army launched after the killing of its soldiers in combat, appear to have been carried out with disregard for civilian life," said Amnesty International. "There seems to be a culture of impunity within the Israeli forces which is contributing to routine use of reckless and disproportionate force."
