Shi'ite Scholar Inexplicably Still In Jail
| Shaikh Safdar Razi, a prominent Shi'ite scholar was arrested in early April at his Plano, TX home. Shaikh Razi was legally seeking political asylum when he was suddenly arrested for "immigration charges" according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. No further explanation was offered. In response Muslim and Intrafaith leaders have started efforts to secure Shaikh Razi's release.
Shaikh Razi's hearing was set to take place on Tuesday April 15th, 2008 but the trial was delayed once again. The authorities have delayed his hearing twice and his new trial date is April 29th. FreeSafdarRazi.com is tracking the issue.

| Bahrain Biased Against Shi'ites | 04/03/2008
The Government of Bahrain has been criticized for systematically preventing the Shi'ite majority from obtaining work and housing. Also, a recent report has found evidence of the government issuing passports to foreign Sunnis in an attempt to overcome Shi'ite population growth. Bahrain has also adopted a policy of terminating high level Shi'ite positions in favor of Sunnis. Several political parties are attempting to decrease this marginalization.

Islamophobia In The Media

The host of a popular Christian program, Pat Robertson recently made comments on air about Islam that have shocked many people. He claimed that Islam is not a religion and hence should not be treated as such. This is evidence that Islamophobia is still rampant in the United States and needs to be dealt with through interfaith dialogue and understanding.

| Turkey And The EU | 04/10/2008
On a recent visit to Turkey, the EU Commission President spoke about the positive outcomes of Turkey becoming an EU member. He feels that a predominantly Muslim Turkey will be an example of how secularism and democracy can coexist with Islam. However, the EU is still wary of admitting Turkey and is requiring many more governmental reforms.

| Former US President To Meet With Hamas | 04/08/2008
Former President Carter is planning a trip to the Middle East and may be meeting with Hamas leader Meshal. Though nothing has been announced, critics feel doing so would undermine sanctions placed on Gaza and give Hamas legitimacy. Those favoring a potential meeting feel Carter is showing a desire to achieve peace in the region by opening up dialogue.

| Israeli Radio Station Shut Down |

Israeli authorities arrested a group of radio broadcasters and shut down the station, citing operating license violations. The radio station is well known for broadcasts promoting Israeli-Palestinian cooperation and Middle East peace. The arrested have been put into house arrest and the station dismantled. The government is denying that the content of the stations broadcasts spurred the unprovoked arrests and instead stated that they were operating without a license.
