IIC Holds Successful Round Table
Islamic Information Center
The Islamic Information Center (IIC) held its first of a summer Round Table Series on June 29th, 2008. The IIC's mission is to be a resource of accurate and credible information concerning Islam, and to supply the media and governmental agencies with this material. Our organization hopes to foster positive perception of our religion, and to increase awareness on issues concerning Muslims today. Participants discussed methods for young Muslim professionals to contribute to positive political efforts.
 
Obama supporters claim Hussein as their middle name

In a Spartacus inspired effort to eliminate the xenophobic propaganda surrounding Barack Obama's Islamic middle name, supporters have stated their own middle names to now be Hussein as well. Facebook groups, blog posts, and even declarations through nametags are all part of a new movement to eradicate America's seemingly anti-Islamic fear surrounding the middle name of the democratic presidential hopeful.
Sunni party may finally endorse Iraq's Shiite-government

In what is considered an essential move to facilitate peace between Iraq's rival factions, the nation's main Sunni party has come close to allying itself with the Shiite-run government.  The Sunni bloc has maintained a yearlong boycott against the government, and this step would be a tremendous accomplishment towards improving the Iraqi condition. The deal to bring the Sunni bloc in is still tenuous, and could easily be withdrawn if negotiations don't go accordingly.
Israeli human rights group calls Israel's policy on water crisis "discriminatory"

B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights group, has said that the limits Israel has placed on the Palestinian Authority ability to dig water wells "will have serious repercussions on the economy and health." The groups says the Israelis in the West Bank consume 3.5 times more water than the Palestinians do, and the crisis continues to hurt both communities.
Jordan swears in newest ambassador to Iraq

King Abdullah II of Jordan has named Nayef al-Zaidan as his country's new ambassador to Iraq. Other Middle Eastern countries are looking to reopen their embassies in Baghdad soon.
Gaza ceasefire not being upheld

Israeli and Palestinian forces' delicate truce on the Gaza strip has been violated multiple times by both parties. Israeli troops have repeatedly fired at Palestinian civilians, while Palestinian forces have launched rockets into Israeli terrain.  The truce is only thirteen-days-old as of July 2nd, and remains to be extremely tenuous.
Baghdad faces gas challenges

With one of the largest oil reserves in the world, Iraq faces an ironic predicament in delivering gas to its citizens. Gas lines miles-long can be found in the city of Baghdad, due to the recent sabotage of a pipeline according to oil ministry spokesman Assem Jihad. Iraq has stated that six oil and two natural gas fields will be open to development by foreign firms.
Two Afghani civilians killed

June 23, 2008

After an Afghan-American convoy was ambushed by the Taliban, security forces retaliated by killing one of the Taliban's members. During the firing a civilian child and father were killed. Civilian deaths like these have instigated much protest in Afghanistan.
Saudis building High Tech Neighborhood in Medina

In a project series created to attract foreign investment, Saudi Arabia has invested billions of dollars into the city of Medina to build what is called a "Knowledge Economic City."  Being one of four hi-tech artificial cities, with many more to come, this KEC has been placed in what is considered to be the "cradle of Islam." The project aims to create jobs, better housing, and higher education in each of the cities.
U.S. handover of Iraqi province postponed

The U.S. military, which planned to relinquish its control over the Shi'a province of Diwaniyah in Iraq, stated that it postponed the agreement due to bad weather. Spokesman for the Diwaniyah provincial council, Sheikh Ghani Abid Dahash said the delay was due to a lack of "coordination between the central government and US forces."
$100m allocated to poor areas of Sadr City

Iraq has pledged $100 million to aid in rebuilding the east Baghdad neighborhood in Sadr City. This money will contribute to creating jobs and constructing homes in the area, where there has been much conflict between anti-American militants and U.S. troops. Another $50 million will go to the neighborhood of Shula.
UK channel's latest endeavor to facilitate understanding

As part of UK's Channel 4's new season of The Wonders of Islam, the channel has started an online operation to locate 500 people named Osama in 50 days. The project will allow users access to online updates, including videos, photos, and blogs of the journey. The show is part of an effort to encourage understanding of different religions and emphasize diversity.
