This holiday is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is considered the Son of God in Christianity, and one of the Ulul Azeem, or exalted Prophets, in Islam. In Jordan if you don't have "wasta" or connection it is very difficult to advance academically. Due to this many young Jordanian students have turned to Islam. Islamic activist group the Muslim Brotherhood is one of Jordan's largest and most influential movements. It is a group that would like to see the state run by Islamic law. Iraqi journalist, Muntadar al-Zaidi believed that he would be shunned by family, friends and the coworkers for his actions. However he has received praised from them and the Arab world for his actions. On December 14, Israel held an anti-Islam conference. The speakers at this conference are Islamophobes such as Daniel Pipes, Dutch Legislator Geert Wilders and right-wing Israeli lawmaker Aryeh Eldad. These speakers made comments against Islam and praised Israel for finally holding a conference of this nature in Jerusalem. Critics of the conference include Ismael Shindi. Shindi is a Professor of Islamic Studies at Hebron University, and has stated this was a conference of hate held by people that are not serious scholars. | Americas and Europe | Fort Dix Verdict Considered Fair
| December 24th , 2008 Five men (Mohamad Shnewer, 23; Serdar Tatar, 25; and brothers Dritan, 30, Shain, 27, and Eljvir Duka, 25), all immigrant Muslims were convicted of plotting an attack on Fort Dix. These men underwent a federal jury trial and were found guilty in conspiring to kill soldiers, but not guilty of attempted murder. Lisa Valentine, a Muslim resident of Georgia, was ordered to serve 10 days in jail because she refused to take her hijab off before attending a hearing. This prompted protests in Douglasville a city on Atlanta's west suburban outskirts, and the conviction was overturned. An Ulema convention, hosted by Jamaat-e-Islami was held at Alfalah Hall in Islamabad, Pakistan. The convention was held to promote religious peace during the month of Moharram. Some of the speakers included Mian Muhammad Aslam, who is also JI Naib Ameer Punjab, Senator Maulana Rahat Hussain of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Maulana Nazir Farooqi, Maulana Abdul Jalil Naqshbandi, and others. Mian Aslam has prompted Pakistani President to take a strong position against Indian allegations and be a good spokesperson for the nation. Pakistan's Interior Minister, Rehman Malik has stated that Lashkar-e-Jhangvi played a role in plotting the terrorist attacks against the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad. This group has been outlawed in Pakistan and linked to the Al-Qaeda. Hundreds of people were killed in the fighting between Nigerian Muslim and Christian gangs. The fighting broke out on Nov. 28th due to disputes regarding the local election. There has been a lot of tension between Muslims and Christians in the middle belt region of Nigeria. Human Rights Watch researchers investigated the killings due to witness testimonies, they found that government officials were responsible for killing 47 people, also nearly all Muslims. |
