In early 2007, the Islamic Information Center relocated its main headquarters to the National Press Club building in Washington D.C.  The National Press Club is an international news media hub, home to hundreds of media organizations from around the world, and regularly hosts world leaders and various elected officials from around the nation.  By positioning an office in this location, the Islamic Information Center is uniquely suited to disseminate important Islamic information throughout the world in a professional and instantaneous manner.

(WASHINGTON DC - July 6, 2009) The Islamic Information Center would like to celebrate with you the birthday of one of Islam's greatest heroes, Imam Ali Ibn Abu Talib. On this day Muslims worldwide celebrate the birth of Islam's first Imam and successor to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet's closest companion and son-in-law.

In the Islamic Calendar, Imam Ali was born on the 13th of Rajab to his father, Abu Talib ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib and his mother, Fatima bint Asad. His parents were a part of the Banu Hashim tribe; meaning Ali was a descendant of Ishmael, the son of the Prophet Abraham. Imam Ali's birth is truly significant to the Islamic community not only because he was the first male to accept the Prophet Mohammad's message, but because he is the only person to have been born inside the Holy Kaaba. The Kaaba is the black "cube" like structure located in Mecca in modern day Saudi Arabia.

Imam Ali was the first in a line of infallible leaders to succeed Prophet Muhammad, and was husband to the Prophet's daughter, the Lady Fatima Zahra. He grew up alongside the Prophet, and professed himself towards the cause of Islam at the age of ten.

Muslims around the world admire and emulate Ali for his authority, wisdom, generosity, bravery, and devotion to Islam. Imam Ali was known for his just dealings with both Muslims and non-Muslims, and his incredible knowledge about the message of God. Imam Ali was a great scholar as well as an amazing leader. The Nahj al-Balagha (Peak of Eloquence) is a historic collection of sermons and sayings of Imam Ali that emphasize his incredible knowledge on the Islamic faith.

During Imam Ali's rule as caliph he was assassinated while performing the pre-dawn morning prayer, called "Fajr", at a mosque in Kufa, dying a few days later on 21st of Ramadan (the Islamic month of fasting). Imam Ali's death was a tragic loss to the Islamic community, and has continued to be mourned by hundreds of millions of Muslims to this day. Imam Ali is buried in one of Islam's most important mosques, located in modern day Najaf, a city in Iraq.

IIC is working hard to develop an information packet about Imam Ali. This packet will help individuals, not familiar with Islamic concepts or terminology, learn about Imam Ali, his importance in Islamic theology, as well as his relationship to Prophet Muhammad. This packet will be freely available online and in print, and will be presented to federal and media agencies around the world. Keep watching your inbox for the release of the Imam Ali information packet!
