Obama's Breakthrough E-mail

June 12, 2008

By MOWAHID HUSSAIN SHAH

The trail blazed by Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, and Muhammad Ali has now been followed by Barack Obama.

What appeared unthinkable yesterday looks realisable today. Obama could become the 44th President of the United States.

44 years ago, before the advent of the Civil Rights Act in America, there was still legal separation between blacks and whites, including, but not limited to, the use of separate bathrooms, drinking from different water fountains, and sitting separately in buses. During the time of President Franklin Roosevelt (1933-1945), lynchings of blacks could occur (and did occur) in the American South, without legal repercussions. There were significant roadblocks which prevented blacks from exercising their right to vote.

Yanking in the UN E-mail

June 10, 2008

By MOWAHID HUSSAIN SHAH

So, the UN is being tasked to investigate BB's slaying. It seems that some want it to follow the Rafik Hariri model, in that when the Lebanese leader was killed in February 2005, the UN Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution whereby an investigative team was despatched to Lebanon.

Arguably, the UNSC - which has been rubber-stamping big power moves in the Middle East - may have had a stake in implicating Syria for it being a member of the "axis of evil" and a "roadblock" to the "peace process" there. It bears mentioning here that, in 2004, the 67-year-old nearly blind wheelchair-bound paralysed Palestinian spiritual leader Sheikh Yassin was gunned down by an Israeli helicopter gunship. One does not recall a similar effort or outrage from the UNSC.

Americans want to Hear More on Iraq

Thursday, May 22, 2008

A recent poll from the Zogby news release has demonstrated that a majority of the American people believe coverage on the Iraq war has been fair or poor. When respondents to the poll were asked what coverage they would like to see more of, stories about the Iraqi people and government were the two most chosen choices.

It is believed that television has dumped Iraq as a story, and that there is still a need of clarification on many issues concerning the war. No distinction has been made between Abdul Aziz al-Hakim's Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq and Muqtada al-Sadr's Sadr Movement, both of which are Shiite religious parties. Many Americans believe there is a need for more coverage saying that the war even has an impact on their local communities.
