IIC Round Tables Return for 2008
| The Islamic Information Center (IIC) is proud to announce that it will be hosting another session this month, on June 29, 2008. For those new to the program, the Round Table discussions are aimed at facilitating communication between DC Area Muslim Interns & Young Professionals with Islamic groups who can provide resources and benefit from their professional association.
The IIC's mission is to be a resource of accurate and credible information concerning Islam, and to supply the media and governmental agencies with this material. Our organization hopes to foster positive perception of our religion, and to increase awareness on issues concerning Muslims today.
The goal of the DC Area Muslim Round Table is to create a medium where young professionals can aid the cause of Islam and network with other interested individuals like themselves. For more information on this event, please contact

Rabbi Steve Weisman of Bowie's Temple Solel and leader of the Islamic Society of Southern Prince George's County, Shadeed led a six-seminar interfaith dialogue that ended on June 1.The Union for Reform Judaism and the Islamic Society of North America created a new curriculum for 11 groups nationwide to hold meetings. The Dar al Hijrah mosque in Culmore, VA was mysterious to the non-Muslim community, but is now host to community blood drives and mental health fairs. The mosque hands out food donations each Thursday, and its leaders attend meetings with other religious authorities in the area, including a monthly brainstorming session. Kuwaiti psychologist Naif al-Mutawa is the creator of The 99, a new comic-book series about superheroes that each represent one of the 99 names of Allah. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been meeting with Palestinian and Israeli leaders to facilitate negotiations for a peace treaty to be made by the year's end, but Israel's new housing project is undermining these attempts. "We consider settlements to be the greatest obstacle to the road of peace," Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said. Rice claims the project is "simply not helpful."

The First International Islamic Conference on Dialogue was held in Makkah from June 2 to June 6, 2008. The conference was organized by the Muslim World League but fully supported and facilitated by King Abdullah at the highest level. King Abdullah himself inaugurated the conference and attended the full session that was addressed by the former president of Iran Rafsanjani, the Mufti of Saudi Arabia, the President of Al Azhar, the Mufti of Egypt and the secretary general of Muslim World League.

The US military is paying and arming young Iraqi men in Sadr City to aid in protecting neighborhoods. The recruitment is part of a new US initiative based off of the Awakening movement to gather former Shi'a soldiers into secure American-controlled groups.

The World Food Program, which aids in paying for the ever-increasing fuel and food expenses, received a donation of $500 million recently from Saudi Arabia. This money is greatly needed to keep aid flowing to Darfur, but the air service, which needs funds to distribute the aid, is separate. |
